Meet Sonya
Sonya Sanmateu, LCSW
As a psychotherapist, I specialize in the treatment of eating disorders, disordered eating, and body image issues. I also have extensive experience supporting individuals navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, and life transitions.
My therapeutic approach is integrative and grounded in evidence-based methods, customized to meet your unique needs and goals. I recognize that every person’s journey is unique, and I strive to create a safe, supportive space where you feel understood and empowered. Together, we’ll explore the underlying factors contributing to your difficulties, deepen your self-awareness, and build valuable skills to navigate challenges more effectively—ultimately helping you move toward a more fulfilling life.
My approach also incorporates mind-body practices. Drawing from my background as a yoga teacher with specialized training in therapeutic, trauma-informed, and restorative yoga, I offer breathing and grounding techniques—when helpful—to support nervous system regulation, reduce stress, and deepen your connection to your body and inner experience.
Prior to my work as an outpatient therapist in group practice, I served as Assistant Clinical Director at a PHP/IOP program for adolescents and adults with eating disorders.
I earned my MSW from the University at Buffalo’s School of Social Work, where I was drawn to its trauma-informed, human rights–based framework—a foundation that continues to guide my clinical work today.
If you're ready to take the next step in your healing journey, I’d be honored to walk alongside you.
